Position profile: Defensive backs

With the draft more than 10 weeks away, I'd consider it a possibility the 49ers could select a top cornerback, if one remains, in the middle of the first round. Or they could take a cornerback with return skills in the second or third round. It's unlikely the 49ers would select a safety in the first round.

Time to hit the reset button: The San Francisco 49ers going forward

Now that we have a new Super Bowl champion, it's only fitting that we shoe-horn the 49ers into the middle of this story.  The 49ers and Saints are drastically different teams so generally speaking it's hard to find similarities between them.  Nonetheless, the completion of the Super Bowl means we get to hit the reset button on the 49ers 8-8 season. With everybody back to 0-0, and with free agency and the draft just around the corner, I thought it'd be fun to open up…

Smith, Rice Lead 7 New Into the Pro Football Hall of Fame

From: AP Here’s how you stop Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith: Put them in the Hall of Fame and watch them break down and cry. The men who tore apart NFL defenses couldn’t handle the emotions Saturday when they were elected to the shrine along with five others. “They told me ‘Don’t cry,”’ Rice said, his eyes wet with tears.

The suspense is over: 49ers WR Jerry Rice, aka G.O.A.T., will enter the Hall of Fame in 2010

More photos » SUSAN RAGAN - AP Browse more photos » In the least surprising news since…well…ever, Jerry Rice will be a member of the 2010 class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  There was literally zero chance Jerry Rice was not going to make it into the Hall of Fame on his first try.  Jerry Rice was statistically dominant, but more importantly, he had a sense for the moment. For a guy who came out of a …

Vontae Davis Taking South Beach Top To Bottom

Here’s an old photo of Miami Dolphins rookie cornerback Vontae Davis and his brother, 49ers Tight End Vernon Davis: Like his brother, Vontae struggled on the field in his rookie season in the NFL with Miami, but I’m happy to report that he’s apparently an enthusiastic purveyor of the South Beach lifestyle. The five best quarterback combos in Super Bowl history

Everyone who follows the NFL knows that the upcoming matchup between Peyton Manning (notes) and Drew Brees (notes) is one of the most intriguing quarterback battles in Super Bowl history. If we look simply at quarterback rating, an imperfect but fairly universal statistic, Manning and Brees have the second-best total of regular-season efficiency in any Super Bowl

Could Owens and Ochocinco Work Together in Cincinnati?

Seems like all the talk in Miami yesterday was about Chad Ochocinco’s appearance on NFL Network talking about wanting Terrell Owens to come to the Bengals in 2010, lining up opposite him: Begals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco, who was appearing with NFL Network’s Rich Eisen and Warren Sapp, thinks Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens will be a Bengal in 2010. Owens said that it could happen because both players have the same goal in mind, winning a Super Bowl.

CB Harris Wants to Be Back in 2010

ESPN reports that cornerback Walt Harris says he wants to be back in 2010: Cornerback Walt Harris says he feels good and wants to return for another NFL season, although the veteran cornerback isn’t sure if the 49ers will ask him to return.
